CTT – Correios de Portugal launches this Wednesday, March 30th, a philatelic issue to mark the centenary of the First Air Crossing of the South Atlantic, between Portugal and Brazil. This issue consists of three I20g stamps, corresponding to a face value of €1.05, with a circulation of 75,000 copies each. The First Air Crossing of the South Atlantic, carried out by aviators Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, constituted a historical reference for the unifying social impact on the Portuguese Nation and for its intrinsic value in temporal, scientific and individual terms, despite the limited resources available. The completion of this crossing in 1922, with 4,367 miles covered in 60 hours and 14 minutes, operating a single-engine floatplane, could cause astonishment due to the audacity of the crew. However, it was because 36 hours and 29 minutes were flown over the ocean, without geographical references, with perfect knowledge of the position and based exclusively on astronomical observation, which would be considered an unprecedented and innovative feat at the time, precursor of autonomous air navigation. . The individual seals represent the three “machines” used. The first, on take-off from Lisbon, on March 30, 1922, at dawn, the Fairey IIID version Mark II, F 400, identified by the builder as the Transatlantic Load Carrier, which would become the Lusitânia by government decree. The second, Fairey IIID, F 401, registration 16, adrift on May 11, after an emergency ditch and about to be rescued by a merchant ship, the Paris City. The third, the Fairey IIID, F 402, registration 17, which completed the Travessia on June 17, later christened Santa Cruz on arrival in Brazil.
