As franquias mecânicas, são "selos fixos" e advêm de máquinas de franquia postal utilizadas pelos correios e por empresas com grande volume de correspondência. Estas impressões substituem o selo postal adesivo e a marca do dia. As máquinas eram facultadas às empresas (venda ou aluguer) sob concessão do operador postal, gozando estas de vantagens e obedecendo às condições acordadas e legalmente fixadas. Em Portugal, as franquias mecânicas foram autorizadas e condicionadas pelo Decreto n° 37:279, de 14 de Janeiro de 1949:

Em alguns casos, os CTT aproveitaram e adaptaram estas máquinas de franquia para fazerem publicidade aos seus serviços e normas de funcionamento. As empresas não enjeitaram a oportunidade para publicitar a sua marca e produtos - algumas destas franquias privadas são muito procuradas na filatelia temática.
Estes "selos" são compostos essencialmente por 5 elementos (com o decorrer dos anos, alguns deles desapareceram e/ou foram deslocados e/ou alterados):
The mechanical frankings are "fixed stamps" and come from postage machines used by the post office and by companies with a large volume of correspondence. These prints replace the adhesive postage stamp and daymark. The machines were made available to companies (sale or rental) under the concession of the postal operator, these enjoying advantages and complying with the agreed and legally established conditions. In Portugal, mechanical franchises were authorized and conditioned by Decree No. 37:279, of January 14, 1949: In some cases, CTT took advantage of and adapted these franchise machines to advertise their services and operating rules. Companies did not reject the opportunity to advertise their brand and products - some of these private franchises are very popular in thematic philately. These "seals" are essentially composed of 5 elements (over the years, some of them disappeared and/or were moved and/or changed):
