Józef Mackiewicz
On 1 April 2022, a 0.30 PLN postage stamp of the "Józef Mackiewicz" issue was introduced into circulation.
The stamp presents a photograph of writer and publicist, Józef Mackiewicz, from 1966. Along the bottom edge there is an inscription: Poland and the face value of 30 gr. On the envelope, a photograph of Józef Mackiewicz with his daughter Halina, Ostra Brama (Gates of Dawn), Vilnius 1938, a photograph from family collection, and a quotation:" .... only truth is interesting".
The Sejm has established the year 2022 as the Year of Józef Mackiewicz!
, "profession: writer, nationality: anti-communist, beliefs: counter-revolutionary, country of origin: Eastern Europe". - this is how Józef Mackiewicz presented himself.
He was born in Petersburg, "as the son of Antoni and Maria Pietraszkiewicz Mackiewicz, 19 March, old style, (1st April) 1902". - Mackiewicz writes in his biography. This emphasis on the "old style" characterises the writer in a symbolic way. Yes, Mackiewicz was an old-style man, longing for the idea of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, for Poland as a multinational and multicultural "country".
A cavalryman - a volunteer in the Polish-Bolshevik war of 1920. Then, until 1939, a columnist for the Vilnius daily "Słowo". In 1943, he witnessed the discovery of graves of Polish officers murdered by the Bolsheviks in Katyn. He devoted his whole life to revealing the truth about Katyn. After WWII, until his death in 1985, he lived in exile in London and Munich. Author of novels: Droga donikąd (The Road to Nowhere), Nie trzeba głośno mówić (Need to Speak Loudly), Kontra (Contra), as well as of journalistic works: Katyn Massacre in the Light of Documents, Victory of Provocation, In the Shadow of the Cross. Since 2002, the Józef Mackiewicz Literary Award has been granted.
The stamp was printed using rotogravure technique, on fluorescent paper, stamp format: 25.5 x 31.25 mm, in an edition of 5,000,000 units, repeatable. Sales sheet contains 100 stamps.
