Ireland Derry Transatlantic 1840 entire letter Londonderry 17 September 1840 to New York, endorsed to travel by the
Cunard Packet Per Caledonia/via LPool Halifax Boston & N York and pre-paid "1/-" Transatlantic Packet rate, with boxed PAID AT/DERRY in red on face and black DERRY SE 17 1840 cds of despatch on reverse, carried on the First Crossing of the Caledonia (left Liverpool 19 September and arrived Boston 3 October), red circular BOSTON MS/SHIP/OCT 3, rated “20¾“ for US postage (2 cents ship fee plus 18¾ cents internal). First year of Cunard Mail Packets across the Atlantic, and fourth voyage of the Contract Packet which commenced in July 1840 – see Hubbard & Winter pp 16-17, and an extremely early example of this service from Ireland.
