1893 UNIQUE RARITY. 1893 (3 Sept) ½d on half of 1d with surcharge in violet UNSEVERED PAIR (SG 8a) from the top-right corner of the sheet, used with Old Calabar cds at base. The surcharge was applied one horizontal row at a time, the violet ink applied to the first row of stamps on the first half sheet but was considered too indistinct against the lilac of the stamp and changed to red, so only 12 stamps were surcharged in violet creating 24 bisects.
