Jorge Alejandro Newbery (b. May 29, 1875 in Buenos Aires; death on
March 1, 1914, in Mendoza) was an Aviator, sportsman, public
servant, engineer and Argentine man of science. Next to the Mexican
Alberto Braniff and Jorge Chávez Peruvian was one of the first
Latin American fliers. Note that it is considered as the architect
and founder of the Argentina military aeronautics. The public life
of Jorge Newbery was developed between the last decade of the 19th
century and the first decade and a half of the 20th century, in a
very special moment in the Argentina, characterized by a huge
mostly European immigration that multiplied by five the demographic
importance of the country in the world, and the expansion of an
agro-export model that took the GDP per capita of 334 dollars in
1875 1.151 dollars in 1913. Simultaneously in the country had
consolidated a system of oligarchic type, controlled completely by
the autonomist national party (PAN) led by General Julio a.. Roca.
In response, a new middle class had emerged with the 1890
revolution and founded the Radical Civic Union, which had adopted
an insurrectional strategy. The working class showed a growing
trade unions organization and two national stations, with
predominance of ideologies anarchist, revolutionary and Socialist,
trade unionist who would begin to be severely persecuted from 1902.
The highlight of this historic stage was the centenary year in
1910, of the may revolution. The Sáenz Peña law which established
universal and secret voting for males, which would open the way to
triumph in 1916 of the first democratic President, Hipólito
Yrigoyen of the Radical Civic Union was enacted in 1912. Two years
earlier, the same year in which Newbery died, he had started the
first world war that would mark the beginning of the end of the
Argentine agro-export model. Newbery years are years of unshakable
faith in the possibilities of Argentina when Rubén Darío wrote in
his famous song...: «Argentina your day has come!». They are the
years in which appeared the tango, when Nijinsky danced at the
Teatro Colón, when Buenos Aires was inaugurating «subway», when
Guillermo Marconi arrived there to perform the first radiotelephone
with Ireland and Canada communication, when Argentine farmers
'threw lard to the ceiling» in Paris, and that began to appear from
popular idols of sport and art. Buenos Aires had ceased to be the
"great village" to become the "Paris of South America". Few
characters expressed as Jorge Newbery that moment of Argentina.

Jorge Chávez fue uno de los primeros
aviadores iberoamericanos. Cabe destacar que es considerado como el
artífice y fundador de la Aeronáutica Militar Argentina. La vida
pública de Jorge Newbery se desarrolló entre la
última década del siglo XIX y la primera
década y media del siglo XX, en un momento muy especial de la
Argentina, caracterizado por una
enorme inmigración mayoritariamente
europea que multiplicó por cinco la importancia
demográfica del país en el mundo, y la expansión de
un
modelo agro-exportador que
llevó el
PBI per cápita de 334 dólares en
1875 a
1.151 dólares en
1913. Simultáneamente en el país se había
consolidado un régimen de tipo
oligárquico, controlado completamente por
el
Partido Autonomista
Nacional (PAN) dirigido por el General
Julio A. Roca. Como respuesta, una
nueva
clase media había emergido con
la
Revolución de 1890 y fundado
la
Unión Cívica Radical, que había
adoptado una estrategia insurreccional. La
clase obrera mostraba una
organización creciente en
sindicatos y dos centrales nacionales, con el
predominio de las ideologías
anarquista,
sindicalista
revolucionaria y
socialista, que comenzaría a ser duramente
perseguida a partir de
1902. El punto
culminante de esta etapa histórica fue el
Año del
Centenario en
1910, de
la
Revolución de Mayo. En
1912 se
sancionó la
Ley Sáenz Peña que estableció
el
voto secreto y
universal para varones, que abriría
el camino al triunfo en
1916 del
primer presidente democrático, Hipólito Yrigoyen, de
la
Unión Cívica Radical. Dos años
antes, el mismo año en que moría Newbery, había empezado
la
Primera Guerra Mundial que
marcaría el principio del fin del modelo agro-exportador argentino.
Los años de Newbery son años de una fe inconmovible en las
posibilidades de Argentina cuando
Rubén Darío escribía en su
famoso
Canto...: «¡Argentina tu día ha llegado!». Son
los años en que aparecía el
tango,
cuando
Nizhinski bailó en
el
Teatro Colón, cuando Buenos
Aires inauguraba
«el subte»,
cuando
Guillermo Marconi llegaba ese país
para realizar la primera comunicación radiotelefónica con Irlanda y
Canadá, cuando los
estancieros argentinos «tiraban manteca al
techo» en
París, y que comenzaban a aparecer los
ídolos populares provenientes del
deporte y del
arte. Buenos
Aires había dejado de ser la «Gran Aldea» para convertirse en
la «París de Sudamérica». Pocos personajes expresaron como
Jorge Newbery ese momento de Argentina.
