Otto von Habsburg, in Österreich amtlich Otto Habsburg-Lothringen, meist kurz Otto Habsburg[1] (* 20. November 1912 in Reichenau an der Rax, Niederösterreich; † 4. Juli 2011 in Pöcking, Bayern[2]), war der älteste Sohn von Karl I., dem letzten Kaiser von Österreich und König von Ungarn, sowie Schriftsteller, Publizist und Politiker. Für die CSU war er von 1979 bis 1999 Mitglied des Europäischen Parlaments. Er besaß die Staatsbürgerschaften von Österreich, Deutschland und Ungarn[3] sowie, nach der Unabhängigkeit des Staates Kroatien im Jahr 1991, nach Eigendarstellung auch die kroatische Staatsbürgerschaft.[4][5]
Ab Mitte der 1930er Jahre setzte sich Otto von Habsburg – zunächst unter christlich-monarchistischen Vorzeichen – innerhalb der Paneuropa-Union für die europäische Einigung ein. Um den „Anschluss Österreichs“ an Hitler-Deutschland zu verhindern, war er bereit, bis zum Äußersten zu gehen, wie seine Korrespondenz mit Kanzler Schuschnigg von Februar 1938 belegt. Er trat als entschiedener Gegner Hitlers und des Nationalsozialismus sowie des Kommunismus auf. In einem Nachruf hieß es: „In der Politik […] betrachtete er sich […] ,als Werkzeug Gottes‘.“[6]
Jahrzehnte später waren seine Haltung zum Rechtsextremismus und seine Aussage zum Einfluss von Juden in der US-Politik[7] Anlass für Kritik und Kontroversen. Ebenso wurde seine 2008 gehaltene Festrede bei einer ÖVP-Gedenkveranstaltung (zum 70. Jahrestag „Anschluss Österreichs“) im österreichischen Parlament heftig kritisiert, in der er Österreich als erstes Opfer Hitlers darstellte und behauptete, „dass es keinen Staat in Europa gibt, der mehr Recht hat, sich als Opfer zu bezeichnen!“ Er bezeichnete sich selbst als „Legitimisten“ (so z. B. 2002 in einem Interview mit der Wochenzeitung Junge Freiheit), worunter er jemanden verstand, „der für die legitim annehmbare Staatsform in jener Zeit eintritt, in der diese Staatsform existiert“.[7]
1961 unterzeichnete er die vom Habsburgergesetz als Bedingung für seine Einreise nach Österreich geforderte Erklärung des Verzichts auf Herrschaftsansprüche; im gleichen Jahr wurde aber in Deutschland sein Sohn als Erzherzog ins Pöckinger Taufregister eingetragen. Aus der Unsicherheit über seine tatsächliche Haltung zur Republik entstand die „Habsburg-Krise“. 1966, nachdem Bundeskanzler Josef Klaus erstmals seit 1945 eine ÖVP-Alleinregierung bilden konnte, durfte Otto Habsburg wieder legal nach Österreich einreisen. 1972 kam es zum „historischen Handschlag“ mit dem sozialdemokratischen (SPÖ-)Bundeskanzler Bruno Kreisky. Habsburgs politische und historische Äußerungen führten in Österreich bis 2008 immer wieder zu Kritik und Diskussionen, bei denen er vor allem die Sozialdemokraten als Gegner hatte.
Otto von Habsburg war Mitinitiator und Schirmherr des „Paneuropäischen Picknicks“ am 19. August 1989. Nach dem Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs 1989/90 wurde sein persönlicher Beitrag zu diesen Ereignissen wiederholt gewürdigt.
Otto von Habsburg[4] (20 November 1912 – 4 July 2011),[5][6] also known by his traditional royal title of Archduke Otto of Austria, was the last Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary from 1916 until the dissolution of the empire in 1919, a realm which comprised modern-day Austria, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and parts of Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. He became the pretender to the former thrones, Head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, and Sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece[7] in 1922, upon the death of his father. He resigned as Sovereign of the Golden Fleece in 2000 and as head of the Imperial House in 2007.
The eldest son of Charles I and IV, the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, and his wife, Zita of Bourbon-Parma, Otto was born as third in line to the thrones, as Archduke Otto of Austria, Royal Prince of Hungary, Bohemia, and Croatia.[1][2] With his father's accession to the thrones in 1916, he was likely to become emperor and king. As his father never abdicated, Otto was considered by himself, his family and Austro-Hungarian legitimists to be the rightful emperor-king from 1922.[8]
Otto was active on the Austrian and European political stage from the 1930s, both by promoting the cause of Habsburg restoration and as an early proponent of European integration—being thoroughly disgusted with nationalism—and a fierce opponent of Nazism and communism.[5][9] He has been described as one of the leaders of the Austrian Resistance.[10] After the 1938 Anschluss, where monarchists were severely persecuted in Austria and sentenced to death by the Nazis,[citation needed] Otto fled Europe to the United States.
Otto von Habsburg was Vice President (1957–1973) and President (1973–2004) of the International Paneuropean Union, and served as a Member of the European Parliament for the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU) from 1979 to 1999. As a newly elected Member of the European Parliament in 1979, Otto had an empty chair set up for the countries on the other side of the Iron Curtain in the European Parliament, and took a strong interest in the countries behind the Iron Curtain. Otto von Habsburg played a notable role in the revolutions of 1989, as a co-initiator of the Pan-European Picnic. Later he was a strong supporter of the EU membership of central and eastern European countries.[11] A noted intellectual, he published several books on historical and political affairs. Otto has been described as one of the "architects of the European idea and of European integration" together with Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer, and Alcide De Gasperi.[12]
Otto was exiled in 1919 and grew up mostly in Spain. His devout Catholic mother raised him according to the old curriculum of Austria-Hungary, preparing him to become a Catholic monarch. During his life in exile, he lived in Switzerland, Madeira, Spain, Belgium, France, the United States, and from 1954 until his death, finally in Bavaria (Germany), in the residence Villa Austria. At the time of his death, he was a citizen of Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia[citation needed],having earlier been stateless de jure and de facto, and possessed passports of Monaco, the Order of Malta, and Spain. In 1961, he was offered the crown of Spain by Francisco Franco. He refused, and Juan Carlos of the House of Bourbon was made Franco's successor instead.
His funeral took place at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna on 16 July 2011; he was entombed in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna and his heart buried in Pannonhalma Archabbey in Hungary.
Otto (ou Othon) de Habsbourg-Lorraine (en allemand Otto Habsburg-Lothringen1), archiduc d'Autriche, prince royal de Hongrie et de Bohême, est né le 20 novembre 1912 à Reichenau an der Rax2 et mort le 4 juillet 20113 à Pöcking, en Bavière (Allemagne). Fils aîné de Charles Ier, dernier empereur d'Autriche et dernier roi de Hongrie et de Bohême, il était le chef de la maison de Habsbourg-Lorraine (branche aînée de la maison de Lorraine) et prétendant aux trônes d'Autriche et de Hongrie sous le nom d'Othon Ier. Descendant et héritier des ducs de Lorraine et de Bar, il portait le titre de courtoisie de duc de Bar.
Il était président du Comité international pour le français langue européenne4, du Mouvement pan-européen5 (1973-2004) et député au Parlement européen (1979-1999).
En janvier 2007, il renonce à son rôle de prétendant au trône et c'est son fils aîné, l'archiduc Charles de Habsbourg-Lorraine, qui lui succède sous le nom de Charles II
Franz Josef Otto Robert Maria Anton Karl Max Heinrich Sixtus Xavier Felix René Ludwig Gaetano Pius Ignatius von Habsburg-Lotharingen (Villa Wartholz bij Reichenau an der Rax, 20 november 1912 - Pöcking, Beieren, 4 juli 2011) was tot 1918 de laatste kroonprins van Oostenrijk, tot 1921 kroonprins van het koninkrijk Hongarije. Hij was de zoon van de laatste Oostenrijkse keizer, de zalige Karel I, en keizerin Zita. Als zodanig was hij van 1916 tot 1918 troonopvolger.
Van 1979 tot 1999 was hij voor de Beierse CSU lid van het Europese Parlement, waaronder twee maal, als nestor, voorzitter van de openingszitting. Als organisator van de Pan-Europese picknick op 19 augustus 1989 leverde hij een bijdrage aan de val van het IJzeren Gordijn en het communistische Oostblok. Otto van Habsburg-Lotharingen was actief in de Pan-Europa-Unie, die zich voor de Europese eenwording inzette. Gedurende zijn leven streed Otto van Habsburg-Lotharingen tegen extreem nationalisme, nationaal-socialisme, communisme alsook tegen verschillende vormen van relativisme.
