Zu Künstler und Werk: Gordon House was born in South Wales in 1932. He studied at Luton School of Art, Bedfordshire and St. Albans School of Art, Hertfordshire. From 1952-59 he was designer for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) Plastics Division, and from 1959-60 was graphic designer for the Kynoch Press. He was a part-time tutor at Central School of Art, London, Hornsey School of Art, London, and Luton College of Technology, Bedfordshire, 1961-63. From 1961 he worked as a painter, printmaker and graphic designer in London. House’s first solo show was held at the legendary New Vision Centre in London in 1959. Selected group exhibitions include ‘Situation’ at the RBA Galleries in 1960, now deemed one of the key abstract exhibitions of the decade, as well as ‘New London Situation’, New London Gallery (1961), ‘Neue Malerei in England’, Stadisches Museum Leverkusen (1961), ‘Four London Artists’, Marlborough-Gerson Gallery NY (1968), and ‘Play Orbit’, ICA (1969). House was a key figure in the printmaking revolution of the sixties, being the very first artist to create a fine art screenprint in Britain, and as founder of the printmaking studio ‘White Ink’ where he worked with several notable artistic luminaries of the day including Paolozzi, Pasmore, Blake, Frink, Smith and Auerbach. A retrospective exhibition of Gordon House prints was held at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh and Brooklyn Museum, New York in 1981-82. In his capacity as a designer House worked for many of the major London galleries and arts institutions including the Arts Council, Tate, Royal Academy, Whitechapel, Marlborough, Robert Fraser, Kasmin and Waddingtons. House also provided graphics for the music world, he was regularly employed by Apple Records and famously worked as the typographer for both ‘Sgt Peppers’ and ‘The White Album’ by the Beatles. More recently, House was included in the 1993 ‘60s Exhibition’ at the Barbican Gallery. The Tate Gallery in London has a major holding of original prints by House and examples of his work can be found in the permanent collections of a number of key European and American institutions including the V & A, National Museum of Wales, Arts Council, Museum of Modern Art (NY), Harvard Art Museum, and the Carnegie Museum of Art.
