Les croix de cuivre portent le nom de la région du Katanga.
Elles sont également connues sous le nom de handa.
Leur surface irrégulière est due à l'utilisation de moules en sable pour couler les lingots en forme de croix. À la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle, les croix du Katanga comme celles-ci étaient utilisées comme monnaie d'échange dans le commerce quotidien à travers l'Afrique centrale.
