The outbreak of war in 1914 found the bolt-action rifle at the peak of its development and the machine-gun being used in large numbers f or the
first time. No infantry charge could hope to succeed in the face of such concentrated firepower, and from Switzerland to the sea a system of
trenches appeared which made nonsense of the theories of wart are
current in the pre-war years. The first reaction of the generals was to use longer and heavier artillery barrages in a futile attempt to break the deadlock-with the result that trenches were dug deeper and shell-holes made the ground even more impassable. On other fronts this pattern was repeated, and until the advent of the tank there seemed no hope of any solution to the stalemate. In this book we present the full story of the weapons of the First World War. Artillery, tanks and infantry weapons, as well as gas, flame and other methods of destruction, are described in detail, and illustrated by a superb combination of action photographs and detailed drawings of the weapons themselves.
