De belevenissen van de beide kameraadjes zijn een afspiegeling van een samenleving die nog geloof hechtte aan de vooroorlogse normen en waarden.

Op een dag vinden Sjors en Sjimmie een fles op het strand met een brief erin met Afrikaanse tekens. Gelukkig kan Sjimmie de tekens lezen en ze komen tot de ontdekking dat de vinder van die brief naar Afrika moet om geschenken in ontvangst te nemen. Daar ze geen geld voor de reis hebben gaan ze als verstekeling aan boord van een schip dat een piratenschip blijkt te zijn. Ze lijden schipbreuk en spoelen op Afrika aan. Daar ontmoeten ze Sjimmie's vader en moeder en gaan per scooter naar het zuiden waar een oom van Sjors een diamantmijn heeft en waar ze, na eerst nog tweemaal in een politiecel gezeten te hebben, uiteindelijk aankomen.
