Edward Vermeulen (°Beselare 1861 +Hooglede 1934), beter bekend onder zijn schrijversnaam ‘Warden Oom’, is één van de bekendste West-Vlaamse volksschrijvers. Niemand beter dan hij heeft het oude landelijk leven in de 19e eeuw beschreven en getypeerd. Vermeulen schreef in totaal 23 volksromans ‘uit ons volk, voor ons volk’. Vanaf boek 16 werden deze uniform uitgegeven in de reeks ‘De Volledige Werken van Edward Vermeulen’. De boeken 16 tot en met 23 bestaan dan ook enkel in deze uitgave. Het was zeker de bedoeling de boeken 1 tot en met 15 in deze reeks her uit te geven, maar de nummers 1, 7, 8, 10 en 11 zijn nog nooit als dusdanig teruggevonden.

Dit is boek 21, het meest gezochte werk van Vermeulen. Het is ook het enige dat geen verhaal brengt, maar dat de weergave is van twee oorlogsdagboeken 1914-1918: namelijk zijn eigen dagboek (p. 1-133) en het dagboek van een neef die priester was in Nieuwpoort en vluchtte naar De Panne (p. 137-275). In zijn eigen oorlogsdagboek vertelt Vermeulen op magistrale wijze over het leven in Hooglede onder de bezetting en de vlucht in 1917 naar Balen.
