Walther von der Vogelweide
This special issue stamp bears a portrait of Walther von der Vogelweide based on the famous illustration from the Manesse manuscript collection. In this way, the eminent minstrel became the "patron" of the 3rd Austrian Choir Festival which was held from July 17 to 20, 1958 in Vienna. The musical programme offered an overview of international choir work. On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the death of Franz Schubert on November 19, all his works for male voice choirs were performed in the course of the festival. The 3rd Austrian Choir Festival was not organised as a national celebration but rather conceived of choir music as a symbol of international understanding. As choirs from all over the world participated in this event, the festival played a special role in consolidating world peace in its time.
